5 things to consider when you move from the capital to the coast

You’re thinking about relocating. You know what kind of house you’d like; how many bedrooms, bathrooms, whether you need a garage, garden, or even an annex for visitors, but what other things do you need to consider to make sure you find your dream relocation destination?

Yes, finding the perfect house is important, but from our experience with clients, there are 5 things to consider.

1. The Area

There are so many coastal towns out there that you might find it hard to choose the right one, so you let the house guide you. Find the perfect house and you’ll love the area, right? It’s so important that you check out the town(s) you’re thinking about moving to. Get a feel for them, talk to the locals, try their coffee shops and restaurants. How far is it to the beach, how busy does it get in the Summer, what’s in the surrounding areas? You need to find a home that feels right, but you also need to make sure the area you choose to live in is perfect for you and your family.

2. Train times/transport links

I know you might have decided to work from home, but will you need to commute back to the city at all? How long is the train time, what’s the cost of your ticket and how often do the trains run late? Is the station easy to get to and park at?

Yes, it might only be 60 minutes into London, but when you have to drive for 30 minutes to get to the station, parking is limited and the trains are often cancelled then it might not be much fun for your commute.

3. Schools

Do you have school-aged children? Will they be moving from primary to secondary soon? Do you need to consider colleges? Are you planning on children in the future? Schools are an important part of the decision-making process because you want to find the right ones for your children. Looking at their Ofsted reports is a good place to start, but arrange visits for you and your children so you can choose the right one for them.

4. Social life

Do you love a fancy coffee? Do you like to walk to the gym on your lunch break? Do you want to take up surfing or sailing? Do you love the cinema? Think about the things you enjoy doing and make sure you can get all of these things in the area you choose. You might not think they score highly on your wish list, but this is going to be your new home so you want to make sure that you can do the things you enjoy.

5. Longevity

What works now might not be suitable in a year or 5 or even 10 years. What if you choose a house in a rural location that’s an hour’s drive from the nearest town. That might be perfect now, but will it feel too rural in 10 years? We work closely with our clients to help them find the perfect place for now that will still feel like the right fit in the years to come.

These are 5 things you should consider when thinking about relocating, but there might be other things that are important to you and your family. We can work with you to help identify them and make sure you consider them when you’re making your relocation choices.
